make art is an international festival focussed on Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) and open content in digital arts. make art offers performances, presentations, workshops and an exhibition, focused on the blurred line between art and software programming.

What The Fork?!

This year make art focusses on distributed and open practices in FLOSS art. ‘What the fork?!’ is about decentralization. Forking is the new black. Work from one source, copy, patch, improve, experiment, change direction, inspire! Forking is not about quick hacks, but about creating room to experiment, letting go of the one working copy and creating a multiplicity of ideas.

The Silkthreads Mainframe AKA Spiderweb is a 12 hours performance/installation in which a software art piece is being written from scratch. The software itself is a combination of, mostly, patches (Pure Data) used to describe a two dimensional fiction. There are no final patches, the diagram is evolving as the story goes and will disappear as the story ends. It is a book that will be opened with the 1st word and be closed with the last word. The patch/diagram is entangled in other dimensions. A book is linear, while the Silkthreads Mainframe AKA Spiderweb is non linear and its syntax evolves in 2 dimensions, it will only exist and live during MF and never again after. During the 12 hours the audience will be able to read the diagrams on screens and hear the Silkthreads Mainframe AKA Spiderwebs whispers and shouts. After the 12 hours the only trace will be in a time based file repository (SVN) where one will be able afterwards to reconstruct the story via revision numbers (the book pages).

Performed by: Valentina Vuksic, Marloes de Valk, Aymeric Mansoux and Chun Lee.

The Silkthreads Mainframe was part of “Moving Forest”:

Moving Forest is a 12 hour 5 act sonic performance to be intervened by an expandable citywide operatic manoeuver with public wifi and mobile technology. Derived from Kurosawa’s film version of Macbeth, Spider Web Castle. Moving Forest renders the film’s final sequences (12 minutes in length) into a 12 hour sonica of grand scale. Moving Forest reinvents a modern edition of a Castle Central and a city in revolt. Inside the castle, the downfall of the assumed power; outside in the city, the mobilized urbanites march with generated sounds of insurgence towards the imaginary Central. Moving Forest collaborates with sound artists to compose acts and scores, at the same time, drafts a PD (pure data) conspiracy scheme, performing live with citywide wifi transmitted intervention.

Directed by Martin Howse and Shu Lea Chang

Players: Mattin, Leif Elggren, Kaffe Mathews, Joachim Montessuis, Phil Niblock,Alexandra von Bolz’n, Tam Dean Burn, Vagina Jones , Christian Kesten, Natalia Pschenitschnikova, Aymeric Mansoux, Marloes de Valk, Chun Lee, Valentina Vuksik, Matthew Fuller, Linda Dement, Graham Harwood, Michael Asschuer, Gordan Savicic, Gottfried Haider, Ricardo Miranda Zuniga, Martin Howse, Martin Kuentz, Alexei Blinov, Brendan Howell, Ilze Black, Olaf Matthes.

“Nowhere was the demonstration of the conference theme stronger than in the events which took place off-site. The creators of “The Moving Forest” (directed by Shu Lea Chang and Martin Howse) literally invited attendees to conspire along with them through an epic twelve hour, five act sonic performance using WiFi and mobile technology. A mysterious base was set up in the House of World Cultures, with PD patches being tweaked, equipment being distributed, and various “agents” prowling about. As part of one of the acts, participants armed with “radio guns” stormed landmarks and maneuvered through the city. As an exclusive event to transmediale.08, the Urban Media Salon acted as a platform for discussion and exchange, but fittingly operated largely under the radar. The locations for the salons, hosted in private apartments, were announced at the last minute, and guests were invited to share meals with other participants. Conversation flowed, and new bonds were formed over discussion of not only the transmediale.08 events, but also other diverse topics that emerged over the course of the evening. Sitting at the dinner table in a stranger’s apartment, I experienced the strongest sense of potential for the “conspire” theme. Conspiracy in action, after all, can only happen behind closed doors, at a series of intimate gatherings scattered across the city, in locations that were learned a few hours before and scrawled on a scraps of paper, to be forgotten later.” (from: review of Transmediale 08:CONSPIRE, by Michelle Kasprzak, 06.02.08)

synth.f

Synth.f is a performance by Aymeric Mansoux, Tom Schouten and Marloes de Valk. It’s a live improvisation using home grown 1bit synths. The synths are build using the CATkit board, an open hardware project. The boards contain a PIC 18F microcontroller, and have 5 knobs and 4 buttons as interface. The microcontroller is programmed using the purrr programming language.

Synth.f was first performed at Piksel festival, friday the 13th 2006. During this performance 3 synths were used, 2 connected to computers and 1 stand-alone (in the shape of a toy piano), to produce a wall of 1bit sound. The second iteration of the performance took place on Sunday the 18th of November 2007.

catkit workshop

Workshop CATkit
15 – 16 November 2007
Techniker Kroen, Bergen, Norway
Price: € 30,- for the board + components
Guests: Tom Schouten, Aymeric Mansoux and Marloes de Valk
BEK and GOTO10

This is the latest evolution of what was drafted and shown at piksel06. We’re not playing with breadboards anymore, but we have designed a PCB, selected some components, and designed a complete standalone 1-bit synth that can be programmed interactively via a computer running GNU/Linux, connected to the kit using a TTL-232R cable.

In the two day workshop we will do the following:

* solder the components to the CATkit board
* get familiar with some basic Purrr (Forth) commands
* incrementally create a custum 1-bit synth controller Purrr program

At the end of the workshop, the development cable is disconnected, and you go home with a little battery operated toy synth.

Please note that the focus of the workshop is on programming, not electronics. However, the Purrr language is very easy to learn, despite it being quite lowlevel. A little bit of programming experience might help though. The Purrr programming toolchain is based on MzScheme, and we urge you to install it before the workshop starts, or use the pure:dyne distribution provided.

321t-set was the opening performance of the make art festival, 24 – 29 of Januari 2006, in Poitiers France. Original and never performed before, this improvisation for two violins, one guitar and three laptops tries to put analogue instrumentalisation first, and take a fresh look at ‘laptop performances’. Each player influences the other directly and indirectly by taking eachothers output as input and using this input to control the way the sound is processed. 321t-set is made using Super Collider and Pure Data.

321t-set is a collaboration between:

Jan-Kees van Kampen studied electronic music and composition in Hilversum. His software struggles to facilitate fluid handling of musical notions, which deal with fractal patterns, undanceable rhythms, amorphic scapes, the sine-noise continuum, and their application in other digital disciplines. He also takes part in a Cologne-based network-band called pbup (powerbooks unplugged).

Chun Lee is a musician/composer from Taipei, Taiwan who now lives and works in London. Initially trained as a classical musician, he became increasingly fascinated by the technological and experimental aspect of contemporary music. He now focuses his compositional practice on algorithmic/generative music using software tools such as Max/Msp and Pd.

Marloes de Valk is a Dutch audiovisual artist, and member of digital art collective ‘Goto10′, currently based in the UK. She studied Sound and Image at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague, specialising in abstract compositional computer games, HCI and crashing computers. Her work consists of audiovisual performances and installations, investigating machine theater and narratives of digital processes.

no.space is the result of a quest to confuse 3D software about the properties of space. 3D software is very aware of how objects take up space, like in the real world, though there is one difference with reality: in the virtual world different objects can reside in exactly the same space. Not without consequences though: the software cannot choose which object has priority, its confusion starts to show itself in wonderful patterns as the objects’ surfaces blend together. Different sounds are used as controls to play with the objects, moving them around the space, searching for moments of unsortable geometry.(2005/2006)

no.space has been performed at 5 DAYS OFF festival, Amsterdam, the Netherlands (15.07.05), Ultrasound, Huddersfield, UK (26.11.05) and make art festival, Poitiers, France (29.01.06)
